Free hat pattern – Swirl Hat – Simple, knit and purl and make a fabulous swirl!

This is a simple pattern I designed to make a fun, warm, and great looking touque (what we call it in Canada!) or beanie, for any size person, on any size loom, any gauge, with a multiple of 6 stitches. It is a 6 stitch repeat of knit 3 and purl 3. Pretty easy to remember and creates a great texture and design.

This pattern would be great for a confident beginner that can knit and purl.

This pattern is knit in the round. You need a loom that can connect to knit in the round for this pattern!

What You Need

  • Loom in a multiple of 6 pegs (6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72, etc)
  • About 150 yards of worsted weight (3 or 4) yarn
  • Loom knitting tool
  • Crochet hook (if you crochet cast on)
  • Tapestry needle (for cast off)
  • Optional: stationary peg markers, I put mine on every 6th peg

Loom Options

I used the CinDwood 7/16″ adjustable “Hats Not Hate” loom, using 60 pegs, which creates a hat for a youth or small adult. To increase or decrease from the sizes I have listed, add or subtract 6-12 pegs.

PEGS GAUGE REPEATS
102 1/4″ 17
72 3/8″ 12
60 7/16″ 10
54 1/2″ 9
42 5/8″ 7
36 3/4″ 6

Note:

All knit stitches are e-wrap knits. If you use another knit stitch it will make the hat smaller.

Casting On

You can cast on with one of three. I used the crochet cast on. Other options are the e-wrap cast on or double e-wrap cast on.

I recommend crochet cast on or double e-wrap cast on.

Brim

The brim is a simple 3×3 rib stitch worked for 7 rows. If you want a bigger brim, just add more rows.

Pattern

This pattern can be worked as much or as little as you want. Some people can finish a hat in rows 8-23. Smaller gauge looms with thinner wool or bigger heads need more repeats. A chart is provided.

Work rows 8-23 once. Then repeat rows 12-17 until the hat is the desired size. I did 8 repeats.
